Commentary
The historic 1861-O Double Eagle minted at New Orleans during the first year of the Civil War is one of numismatics’ storied rarities. During the brief period when the 1861 Double Eagle was produced in New Orleans, this branch mint operated under three governments: the United States, the Independent State of Louisiana, and the Confederate State of Louisiana. Only 17,741 pieces were minted before bullion supplies were depleted. Today, approximately 150-175 pieces survive. Virtually all show signs of handling and some have been "dipped" or cleaned. The mid-range AU pieces seem to have come from the European bank hoards that were repatriated in the early 1990s, and we believe that is where this choice piece originated. It shows the weak “1861” year, which is evident in the majority of strikes -- some experts believe the strong “1861” with obverse die crack indicates a second die was used during the Confederate operation. As usual for the 1861-O, there are numerous handling and bag marks, but this piece has no offending flaws and is one of the stronger AU55 pieces.
