Category — 1847 Issue (Scott 1-2)
5c Red Brown, Recut Left Frameline (1 var). Position 1L, large to huge margins all around, dark shade and early impression, red grid cancel, recut left frameline shows dark and clear, also shows slip of the engraver's tool that curves to the right of the left frameline (where recut) and extends beyond the top left corner of the frameline, Extremely Fine, an outstanding example of this rare plate variety—this stamp with its distinctive early impression proves that the weak or broken frameline at left was recut on a few positions from the start of the 5c 1847 printings, the curved line from the slip of the engraver's tool on this particular position (1L) shows very clearly on this early impression and is not the same as the similar slip on a different recut position—this is all to say that not only is this stamp a significant plate variety in superb condition, it is also a key to understanding the composition of the 5c 1847 plate, particularly the left pane, which still presents mysteries that have not been fully explained—with 2014 P.F. certificate confirming the variety, stating Position 1L and "additionally showing a slip of the engraver's tool at upper left", SCV $1,150 (undervalued in our opinion, especially as an Early Impression)
5c Deep Orange Brown (1b). Vivid color and detailed early impression, large to full margins, bold blue "PAID" in oval cancel of Philadelphia struck twice
EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ORANGE BROWN WITH EARLY IMPRESSION FROM THE FIRST PRINTING.
The Orange Brown shade seen most often is from the 1849 printing from the worn plate, which are poor impressions and have no depth of color. This stamp is an early impression from the First Printing, which comes in Dark Brown, Deep Red Brown and Orange Brown (sometimes described as Brown Orange). It is one of the most beautiful of all 5c 1847 shades, by virtue of its impression.
Ex Gorham. With 2000 P.F. certificate as Red Brown (incorrect) and 2015 P.F. certificate as Orange Brown (it is actually an 1847 Deep Orange Brown). SCV $725 as an ordinary Scott 1b with "Paid" cancel.
10¢ Black (2), Position 44R, showing significant plate scratches at right, essentially filling up much of the right margin, large to full margins, red grid cancel, Very Fine and choice, ex Wall, Saadi and Gross, with 1978 and 1991 P.F. certificates, SCV $850.00 as ordinary position
