Sale 1362, Lot 1295, 1875 Re-Issue of 1869 Pictorial Issue (Scott 123-133a)

1c Buff, Re-Issue (123). Essentially perfect centering, wide margins, fresh color and detailed impression, clear strikes of grid and red cancels

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE.

Ex Kirke. With 2004 P.F. and 2010 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95). Only four other examples have achieved this grade and only one has graded higher (at 98). This statistic has not changed since 2012.

Sale 1362, Lot 1296, 1875 Re-Issue of 1869 Pictorial Issue (Scott 123-133a)

3c Blue, Re-Issue (125). Original gum, lightly hinged, intense color and detailed impression, wide margins with much better centering than usually encountered

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL LIGHTLY HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE. A RARE STAMP IN SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

Original sales figures show that among the 1869 Pictorial Re-Issues, the 3c and 90c stamps accounted for the smallest number of units sold (1,406 and 1,356, respectively). Overall, the 1869's were popular with stamp collectors, far outselling the 1851-60 and 1861-66 Re-Issue sets. However, the 90c stamp's high denomination and the availability of ordinary 3c stamps limited demand. Today, both are rare, and handling over the years has not been kind to most of the surviving examples. This 3c is remarkable not only for its centering, but also its overall freshness and lightly hinged gum.

With 1983 P.F. and 2015 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85). Only seven grade higher (highest is 95), which is a very low number.

With 2007 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95). Only five grade higher (one at 95J, three at 98 and one at 100) and six others share this desirable grade. 90c Carmine & Black, Re-Issue (132). Original gum, lightly hinged, deep rich colors and proof-like impressions on bright paper, marvelous centering with Jumbo margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SENSATIONAL ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 JUMBO BY BOTH P.S.E. AND THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION.

Ex Whitman. With 1993 and 2010 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (last two OGph, XF-Superb 95 Jumbo). Only three grade higher (all 98, we have never offered any) and none share this desirable grade — it is difficult to find stamps that qualify as Jumbos in this issue. In fact, many collectors would prefer this 95 Jumbo over a 98 stamp with smaller margins.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE.
