VERY FINE AND UNIQUE MODEL FOR THE PORTLAND MATCH CO. ISSUE, SCOTT RO147. A SPECTACULAR DESIGN THAT WE BELIEVE IS ONE OF THE MOST STRIKING MATCH & MEDICINE ESSAYS.

There is one additional "essay" attributed to Portland Match Co. in the Turner book — a Byam, Carlton & Co. wrapper with manuscript design alterations in pencil, dated Aug. 1866 (ex Tolman, Sale 926, lot 106). This essay follows that marked-up item, and is relatively similar to the issued RO147 design.

VERY FINE AND UNIQUE APPROVAL PROOF FOR THE DALLEY'S HORSE SALVE 2-CENT MEDICINE ISSUE, SCOTT RS73, WITH ORIGINAL BUTLER, CARPENTER & CO. ENTRY BOOK EXCERPT FOR THE ISSUE.

The Dalley's Horse Salve issue has long been a popular Match & Medicine stamp, owing to the beautiful engraving of two horses. Animal lover philatelists hold it in high esteem, similar to the 1959 Hunting Permit issue featuring a Labrador retriever (see lot 243 for an error example of that Hunting Permit stamp).
