Sale 1375, Lot 308, Scott 123-133a Superb Examples, Varieties and Multiples

2c Brown, Re-Issue (124). Perfectly centered with wide and balanced margins, rich color and proof-like impression on bright paper, long and full perforations all around, gorgeous strike of egg-shaped 6-bar oval grid cancel leaves entire design clearly visible, long and full perforations all around

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT 1869 RE-ISSUE AND EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE. AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT DENOMINATION TO OBTAIN IN SUCH SUPERB CONDITION. THIS IS ALSO THE ONLY EXAMPLE WITH SUCH AN UNUSUAL CANCELLATION.

The 2c 1869 Pictorial Re-Issue is one of the most difficult values of the set (after the 3c and 12c) to obtain in such superb condition and with such wide margins. SMQ estimates that approximately 45 are known in total, and we would estimate the number at perhaps 60. Most have oval registry cancels, and most are heavily cancelled. We are aware of only one or two others which compare favorably to the stamp offered here. The example offered here is the only we have encountered with anything that might be considered a fancy cancel; the design of the cancel is similar to scarabs mostly seen on classic issues.

Ex Floyd and "Natalee Grace". With 1989, 2001 and 2012 P.F. certificates.

12c Green, Re-Issue (128). Rich color and proof-like impression, lightly cancelled by New York datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE. THIS IS DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN IN SUCH CHOICE SOUND CONDITION.

The 12c 1869 Pictorial Re-issue is the one of the rarest of the set in used condition (the 3c is the rarest). This sound used example is an extraordinary stamp.

15c Brown & Blue, Re-Issue, Imperforate Horizontally (129a). Original gum, deep rich colors and remarkably detailed impressions, gorgeous centering with wide and balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 15-CENT 1869 RE-ISSUE IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.

Jonathan W. Rose, in his book United States Postage Stamps of 1869, stated that only one sheet of 100 was issued without horizontal perforations. All were cut into singles by a clerk in the Third Assistant Postmaster General’s office. It is not known how many were sold, but many seem to lack gum. This stamp has full original gum.

The recently published census of Scott 129a by Andrew Morrison records 40 in total (two used), including one in the Miller Collection at The New York Public Library.

Morrison census no. 129a-OG-15. With 1990 P.F. certificate.

90c Carmine & Black, Re-Issue (132). Horizontal pair, superb margins and centering, neat target cancels, brilliant frame color and intense vignette impression on bright white paper

EXTREMELY FINE. BY FAR THE FINER OF TWO RECORDED USED PAIRS, WHICH ARE THE ONLY KNOWN USED MULTIPLES OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE.

This pair is part of a "set" of bicolor 1869 Re-issue pairs—15c, 24c, 30c and 90c values—each cancelled by targets. The 15c and 24c from this group also have portions of blue crayon strokes applied to registered mail passing through the British post office. The existence of this set was revealed in an Aug. 1985 Chronicle article. It is believed that the four pairs were originally used on one or more pieces of registered mail addressed to the English stamp collector, Sir Nicholas Waterhouse, from whose collection the four pairs emanated. The other used pair has cork cancels and was offered in our 2016 auction of the Don David Price collection (Sale 1118, lot 157).

Ex Waterhouse, Juhring, Sheriff (Sale 642, where illustrated on front cover), Weill Brothers sale and Zoellner. With 1978 and 1998 P.F. certificates.
