$3.00 1959 Hunting Permit, Back Inscription Inverted (RW26a). Mint N.H., inverted inscription is strongly printed, choice margins and centering, bright and fresh in every respect
EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1959 HUNTING PERMIT STAMP, INSCRIPTION INVERTED ERROR. THIS IS REPORTED TO BE THE ONLY UNUSED EXAMPLE KNOWN. A KEY TO A COLLECTION OF INVERTS.
The inscriptions printed on the back of Federal Hunting Permit stamps, warning hunters to sign their stamps, began with the 1946 Issue (RW13) and continued until the self-adhesive stamps of the late 1990's. Starting in 1954 (RW21), the inscription was printed on top of the gum, which means when hunters affixed their stamps to paper licenses, the inscription was lost. Therefore, while it stands to reason that at least a full sheet of four panes (112 stamps) received the inverted inscription, many or all the others might have been lost to philately when the gum was removed during use. The Scott Errors catalogue states two reported but reports one as used (i.e. signed but never affixed to a license, Scott also lists a price for used). We are aware of one other unused example, offered in our Sale 1258.

Postal Telegraph Co., 1908-09, Brown, Se-Tenant Pair with "1908" Error (15T32, 15T32a). Horizontal pair with top tab, right stamp "1908" in error, slightly disturbed original gum, serial no. 3668, rich color
FINE-VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE "1908" ERROR IN A PAIR WITH THE CORRECT "1909" ISSUE. THIS SE-TENANT PAIR IS THE MOST DESIRABLE FORM OF THE 1908 DATE ERROR.
The normal 1908 dates were issued in Blue, Yellow and Black (15T29-15T31), but not in Brown. In 1946 George Sloane noted (as quoted in Kramer book): "An error exists on certain upper right franks reading "1908", it occurs on the yellow brown printing and was quickly corrected." Also, "from the fact that the yellow browns differ from the medium browns in clearer, thinner lettering and absence of many minor flaws, a new stone was laid down for this printing. The error would then presumably have been due to using an old pull from the 1908 die or cut instead of one from the 1909 original."
The Kramer book illustrates a single. The pair offered here, which clearly shows the different year dates, is a remarkable item.
