The 30c 1869 Pictorial was originally intended to depict the surrender of General Burgoyne. For whatever the reason, this design was discarded and James MacDonough is credited with its replacement — the Eagle-and-Shield with Flags-and-Stars design.

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE SMALL NUMERAL DIE ESSAY FOR THE 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE AND THE ONLY KNOWN EXAMPLE IN BLACK.
This impression from the unified die with the Type I frame and small numeral is the only example in black that we have offered since keeping computerized records.

EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE PLATE PROOF INVERT.
All known examples of these invert proofs come from the sheets obtained by James A. Petrie at the 1881 Atlanta International Cotton Exposition. They were subsequently a part of the Earl of Crawford collection. It is rare that a single denomination is offered outside of a set, as with the three denominations in this sale.

24c Violet, Panama-Pacific Small Die Proof on Wove (164P2a). Deep rich color, some typical slight toning as with all genuine Panama-Pacific proofs, tiny pinhole top left that is nearly undetectable, appears Very Fine, in 1915, for the Panama-Pacific Exposition, a limited special printing of 413 different small die proofs was created, printed on yellowish wove paper — they are extremely scarce and it is generally believed that three to five sets were produced of each proof, ex Finkelburg, with 2003 P.F. certificate

1c-90c Continental Bank Note Co. Issue, Atlanta Trial Color Proofs on Card (156TC4-166TC4, 179TC4). Complete set of 12 denominations in all five colors, including the 5c (Scott 179TC4), all have large margins, brilliant colors
EXTREMELY FINE SET OF ATLANTA TRIAL COLOR PROOFS FOR THE 1871 CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE ISSUE.
The Atlanta trial color plate proofs on card were prepared for display at the 1881 International Cotton Exposition in Atlanta. Only one sheet each color was printed. The sheets were somehow acquired by James A. Petrie of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, at the close of the exposition (along with the 1869 invert card proof sheets). Petrie claimed that he rescued the proofs just before they were to be burned. They were cut up into one set of blocks of eight, two sets of blocks of four, pairs and singles. These are often offered either by denomination or in other smaller groupings. It is difficult to assemble the complete set.

VERY FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE PANAMA-PACIFIC SMALL DIE PROOFS FOR THE 1881-82 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE. VERY RARELY ENCOUNTERED AS A SET.
In 1915, for the Panama-Pacific Exposition, a limited special printing of 413 different small die proofs was created. Printed on yellowish wove paper, they are extremely scarce. Generally, it is believed that three to five sets were produced of each proof. They are normally offered individually. This a rare opportunity to acquire a complete set from an issue.
