Category — 1c 1851 Issue (Scott 5A-9)
1c Blue, Ty. Ib (5A). Position 9R1E, huge margins all around including part of adjoining stamp at right, brilliant early shade nicely contrasted by light strike of red grid cancel which leaves the design characteristics clearly visible
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ib IMPERFORATE ISSUE WITH A LIGHT RED GRID CANCEL.
Type Ib was produced only as an imperforate stamp from Plate 1 Early. Six positions on Plate 1E furnished stamps qualifying as Type Ib—Positions 3-6R and 8-9R—distinguished by the complete design at top and nearly complete design at bottom. When first entered on the plate, these six positions (as well as 7R1E) had the complete design at top and bottom. However, unlike 7R, small portions of the bottoms were ironed out when the entries were made below them. These top-row positions usually have an ample top margin, but frequently the margins are close or cutting into the sides or bottom. A Type Ib stamp with large margins all around is a great rarity, particularly in sound condition. The stamp offered here has the added attraction of a red cancel.
With 1985 and 2006 P.F. certificates—the latter graded XF-Superb 95. The Scott premium for a red "town" cancel on No. 5A is $550, but the color premium should also apply to this grid cancel, thus SCV $6,550.
1c Blue, Ty. Ia (6). Plate 4, large margins to clear at left, including part of adjoining stamp at right, clear stitch watermark at top, deep rich color and proof-like impression nicely contrasted by red "Paid/U.S. Mail/City Delivery/1 May (?)” one-cent integral-rate New York City carrier datestamp cancel
EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia IMPERFORATE ISSUE WITH A RED NEW YORK CITY CARRIER DATESTAMP CANCEL.
Stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued in April, May and briefly in June 1857 before perforations were introduced. The relatively small number of imperforate Plate 4 stamps issued during this period explains the rarity and desirability of any of the imperforate stamp types produced from this plate (Ia, Ic, II, III and IIIa). The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic).
Ex Hindes and from our 2006 Rarities sale. With 1986 and 2006 P.F. certificates—the latter graded VF-XF 85. SCV $9,950.
1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Position 22R1E with major double transfer, large margins to ample at bottom, gorgeous deep shade and sharp impression showing every detail of this double transfer, complemented by perfect strike of red Chicago Ill. circular datestamp (Aug. 18, undoubtedly 1851), Extremely Fine, one of eight major double transfers on Plate 1 Early, this is second only to Position 65R1E for prominence, this is a magnificent example with beautiful color/impression and a red datestamp cancel, ex Vogel, with 2011 P.F. certificate (XF 90), SCV $180
1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Position 91L1E, triple transfer, one inverted, large even margins, extraordinary deep Plate 1 Early shade, grid cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, the inverted transfers on Positions 71L, 81L and 91L1E were made after the top row of the right pane of Plate 1 Early was entered from the Type I single-relief transfer roll—the three inverted transfers were made from a Type I design 3-relief transfer roll as a sort of trial after the top row entries had been made and the plate was turned around 180 degrees; when another plate ("Plate 0") had to be discarded, the siderographer returned to Plate 1 and erased the three inverted transfers before completing the plate with entries surrounding 3R to 10R; Positions 71L and 81L are double transfers and Position 91L was entered a total of three times, so it is a triple transfer, one inverted; when the plate was reworked in 1852, 71L and 81L were re-entered (but not 91L), making them all triple transfers, one inverted—ex Cowitt, with 2011 P.F. certificate

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL LARGE-MARGINED USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE III IMPERFORATE.
Type III is defined by breaks in the outer lines at both top and bottom. Many Type III stamps have breaks that were created or enlarged by plate wear. Since the wear occurred over a period of time, the majority of stamps of this type (both unused and used) has small breaks in at least one line. The example offered here, with unusually wide margins and clear breaks, is a condition rarity.
Ex Emerson and Koppersmith. With 1985 and 2008 P.F. certificates—the latter graded VF-XF 85. SCV $1,650.
1c Blue, Ty. IIIa (8A). Position 96R1E with huge bottom sheet margin, large margins all around, clear break at top, neatly cancelled by red circular grid and part of "New York" circular datestamp, gorgeous Plate 1 Early shade
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNIFICENT USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE IIIa IMPERFORATE FROM PLATE ONE EARLY. THIS TYPE IS EXCEEDINGLY RARE WITH A SHEET MARGIN.
Looking at the distribution of types on Plate 1 Early (Neinken book, page 66), it is apparent that only three bottom-row positions can be Type IIIa (all others are Type II). Two are "swing" positions: Type II before the plate wore and Type IIIa after it wore enough to cause a break in the line (100L and 100R). Position 96R1E is a strong Type IIIa, and it comes from one of the five misplaced A Relief entries in the bottom row. Elsewhere around the perimeter of each pane, only six other positions offer the possibility of a Type IIIa sheet margin stamp (none in the top row). The stamp offered here, judged by statistical rarity and by its outstanding quality, is a marvelous example of the 1c 1851 Imperforate.
Ex Vogel. With 2011 P.F. certificate (XF 90XQ, "Extraordinary Quality"). SCV $875.

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE COMBINATION PAIR OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE TYPES II AND IIIA. THIS PAIR SHOWS THE B-A RELIEF COMBINATION FOUND ONLY IN THE BOTTOM ROW OF THE RIGHT PANE OF PLATE ONE EARLY.
This pair is an extremely rare and desirable example of the B-A Relief combination from the bottom row of Plate 1E Right, resulting from the misplaced Relief A entries in Positions 96-100R1E (see Neinken book, p. 72 and footnote 8, for commentary on the rarity of 96R1E).
