Category — 1851-56 Issue (Scott 5A-17)
1c Blue, Ty. Ib (5A). Position 6R1E, huge margins to clear, brilliant color on bright paper, neat and unobtrusive strike of Providence R.I. circular datestamp, detailed Plate 1 Early impression
EXTREMELY FINE. A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ib FROM PLATE ONE EARLY. POSITION 6R1E IS ONE OF TWO POSITIONS ON THE PRINTING PLATE THAT FURNISHED THE BEST EXAMPLES OF TYPE Ib.
Type Ib was produced only as an imperforate stamp from Plate 1 Early. Six positions on Plate 1E furnished stamps qualifying as Type Ib — Positions 3-6R and 8-9R — distinguished by the complete design at top and nearly complete design at bottom. When first entered on the plate, these six positions (as well as 7R1E) had the complete design at top and bottom. However, unlike 7R, small portions of the bottoms were burnished away. Positions 6R and 8R had less of the bottom erased than the other Type Ib positions, and for this reason they are more desirable examples of the type.
All Type Ib stamps are very scarce, and the two best examples (6R and 9R) are rare. These top-row positions usually have an ample top margin, but frequently the margins are close or cutting into the sides or bottom. The example offered here is a condition rarity.
Ex "Scarsdale". With 2001 P.F. certificate.
1c Blue, Ty. Ib (5A). Position 6R1E, large margins to barely in at bottom left, including part of sheet margin at top, beautiful bright shade and impression from Plate 1 Early, complemented by bright blue "Charleston S.C. Paid Apr. 24" (1852) circular datestamp
VERY FINE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE TYPE Ib, POSITION 6R1E, WHICH SHOWS THE DESIGN COMPLETE AT TOP AND NEARLY COMPLETE AT BOTTOM — FROM ONE OF THE TWO POSITIONS THAT FURNISHED THE BEST EXAMPLES OF THE TYPE.
Type Ib was produced only as an imperforate stamp from Plate 1 Early. With 1961 and 2005 P.F. certificates.
1c Blue, Ty. Ia (6). Position 98L4, large margins to just touched at bottom, including part of adjoining stamp at top, rich and dark Plate 4 color on bright paper, bold New York July 4 circular datestamp cancel
VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A FRESH AND BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia IMPERFORATE ISSUE.
Stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued in April, May and briefly in June 1857 before perforations were introduced. The relatively small number of imperforate Plate 4 stamps issued during this period explains the rarity and desirability of any of the imperforate stamp types produced from this plate (Ia, Ic, II, III and IIIa). The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic).
Ex Ishikawa. With 1980 and 2002 P.F. certificates.
1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Position 4L2, original gum, lightly hinged, large to huge margins including top sheet margin, brilliant color on bright paper
EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL LIGHTLY HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE II.
Ex Odeneal. With 1980 and 1998 P.F. certificates. With 2007 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85). The P.S.E. grade is an enigma. In this stamp we have full margins framing the ornamentation on all sides, including the left and right sides, and there is a large top sheet margin. Considering the additional "plus" factors — lightly hinged gum and bright fresh color and paper — we are at a loss to explain how this stamp could have received a grade of less than 90.
1c Blue, Ty. III (8). Plate 4, large to huge margins all around including part of adjoining stamp at bottom, beautiful fresh color, neat grid cancel
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE III, SCOTT 8.
With 1984 and 1998 P.F. certificates.
1c Blue, Ty. IIIa (8A). Plate 1E, large to full margins all around with portion of No. 7 adjoining stamp at left, clearly showing wide break at top, neat grid cancel, Extremely Fine, with 1997 P.F. certificate for a pair with the aforementioned No. 7
1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). Recut once at top and bottom, huge margins including large parts of adjoining stamps at sides and trace of adjoining stamp at top, brilliant color, neat strike of circular datestamp, Extremely Fine Gem, a gorgeous stamp, with 2007 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo)
1c Blue, Ty. IV, Triple Transfer, One Inverted (9 var). Position 91L1L, recut once at top, huge margins all around including bottom left corner sheet margins, dark shade, neat strike of town circular datestamp leaves design clearly visible
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE IV WITH TRIPLE TRANSFER, ONE INVERTED, IN THE FINEST CONDITION ATTAINABLE.
The three inverted transfers occurred during the making of Plate 1 Early. Positions 71L, 81L and 91L were entered from the three-subject transfer roll in the spaces where the first three entries had been made and erased (but not fully erased). The plate was turned 180 degrees before starting fresh entries from the transfer roll. Position 91L was re-entered a third time on Plate 1 Early, creating a triple transfer (two upright, one inverted). When Toppan, Carpenter re-worked the worn plate, many of the subjects were re-entered, and all but one were recut at top and/or bottom, creating Scott 9, Type IV, from what we call Plate 1 Late (the same piece of steel in its modified state). Positions 71L and 81L were re-entered, thus becoming triple transfer (one inverted) positions. Position 91L was not re-entered. Thus, Position 71L and 81L only exist as triple transfers one inverted as Type IV stamps, while Position 91L exists as Type II and Type IV.
Ex "Tahoe". With 2000 and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; the variety is unpriced in SMQ, SMQ $800 as normal No. 9)
1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). Position 42L1L, recut once at top and twice at bottom, huge margins including significant portions of adjoining stamps at top and bottom, bold strike of blue circular datestamp, Extremely Fine Gem, a huge stamp, ex Drs. Dauer, with 2006 P.F. certificate (XF-Superb 95) and 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo)
3c Yellowish Rose Red (11 var). Large to huge margins all around including trace of adjoining stamp at right, radiant color nicely complemented by green circular datestamp, Extremely Fine, a beautiful stamp, with 1999 P.F. and 2006 P.S.E. certificate, the latter describing this as the Brownish Carmine shade (XF 90 Jumbo; SMQ of $150 does not take into account the green cancel — which carries a 7x premium in Scott)
5c Red Brown (12). Large to full margins all around, gorgeous deep shade from what must be an early printing, unobtrusive strike of circular datestamp cancel leaves entire design clearly visible, Very Fine and choice, ex Dr. Hinrichs and Drs. Dauer, with 1994 P.S.E. and 2004 P.F. certificates
5c Red Brown (12). Huge margins to just clear at top, rich color, blue Albany Ga. circular datestamp cancel, Very Fine, the Frajola-Mayer book lists no uses of the 5c 1856 Issue from Georgia, with 1992 and 2008 P.F. certificates
5c Red Brown (12). Full margins to ample at left, rich color complemented by New Orleans circular datestamp which is always struck in black, but this has a bluish tinge, Very Fine and choice, with 1979 P.F. certificate
10c Green, Ty. I (13). Position 95L1, huge to enormous margins all around including bottom sheet margin and part of adjoining stamp at right, lovely bright color, lightly cancelled by an almost face-free New Orleans circular datestamp
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE FINEST USED 1855 10-CENT TYPE I IMPERFORATE STAMP WE HAVE OFFERED. A BREATHTAKING STAMP GRADED SUPERB 98 JUMBO BY P.S.E. — THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED AND SHARED BY NO OTHERS.
For some unknown reason, even though the 10c Type I stamps come from the bottom row of the sheet, most have the sheet margin trimmed. The stamp offered here, with its wide sheet margin and enormous margins on all sides, is a condition rarity of the highest order.
Ex Drs. Dauer. With 1993, 2005 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by no others.
10c Green, Ty. I (13). Full to huge margins including bottom sheet margin, black grid cancels and red circular datestamp, Extremely Fine, a beautiful stamp, ex Consul Klep and "Sevenoaks", with 1978 P.F. certificate
10c Green, Ty. II (14). Large to mostly huge margins, wonderful intense color, neat circular datestamp, Extremely Fine Gem, with 2007 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95)
10c Green, Ty. III (15). Phenomenal Jumbo margins all around including left sheet margin and portion of adjoining stamp at right, "New-York Oct. 15" circular datestamp, rich color
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MASSIVE SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT IMPERFORATE TYPE III.
In recent years it has become fashionable to cut down imperforate multiples into enormous singles with parts of adjoining stamps attached. This stamp is what we might call a "natural" beauty. The "New-York" circular datestamp was not normally used to cancel stamps on foreign-bound covers, so this single was probably used alone on a trans-continental 10 rate cover. Its margins extend to the limit, creating a "small die proof" effect.
Ex Drs. Dauer. With 1989, 2004 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo). Only four grade higher (at 100) and five share this grade.
10c Green, Ty. III (15). Enormous margins all around, deep rich color and proof-like impression, New Orleans circular datestamp and red datestamp at bottom, Extremely Fine Gem, ex Dr. Lebow, with 1984, 2004 and 2005 P.F. certificates (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo)
10c Green, Ty. IV (16). Position 64L1, recut at top and bottom, large margins to clear at bottom, tied to small piece by clear strike of "San Francisco Cal. 20 Sep." circular datestamp, Very Fine and choice, 64L1 is the only position recut at both top and bottom, with 1982 and 1991 P.F. certificates
10c Green, Ty. IV (16). Position 54L1, recut at bottom, ample to large margins, exceptionally deep shade and proof-like impression from a very early printing, bold dark blue circular datestamp, Extremely Fine, with 2007 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85), SCV $1,790
10c Green, Ty. IV (16). Position 54L1, recut at bottom, large margins, neat San Francisco datestamp, Extremely Fine, a very choice example of the 1855 10c Type IV, ex Dr. Graves ("Argentum")
