12c Black, Plate 3, Plate Proof on Stamp Paper (36BP5). Position 3L3 with double frameline at right, three huge margins including top sheet margin, ample to clear at bottom, deep shade, clear impression shows frameline characteristics of Plate 3, Very Fine, the imperforate 12c Plate 3 on regular stamp paper is akin to the 24c, 30c and 90c imperforates made at the same time, examples are rare and this position with the double frameline at one side is extremely rare, it comes from the 20 positions in columns 3 and 4 of the left pane, where extra framelines were engraved stamp by stamp between the two vertical columns (a similar ruled line was engraved between columns 7 and 8), ex Allen, with 1993 P.F. certificate

Positions 51-53/61-63/71-73R3, block of nine with natural interpane straight edge at left, unused (no gum), deep shade, Fine-Very Fine, a beautiful unused block of the 12c 1857 from Plate 3, ex Allen, with 2005 P.S.E. certificate, Scott value for original-gum block of four is $5,000.00, a single without gum is $325.00
12c Black, Plate 3 (36B). Positions 66-68/76-78L3, horizontal block of six, extra vertical ruled line between subjects at right (67-68/77-78L3), original gum, several hinge remnants and reinforced perfs, well-centered, deep shade, a couple of spots of missing gum and possibly slight thin in two stamps
FINE-VERY FINE. A RARE BLOCK OF THE 12-CENT 1857 FROM PLATE 3 WITH ORIGINAL GUM AND AN INTERESTING PLATE VARIETY -- THIS IS THE LARGEST BLOCK FROM THE LEFT PANE OF PLATE 3 RECORDED BY ALLEN.
The panes of the 12c 1857 discovered in remainders returned from Southern post offices and sold to Ferdinand Trifet in 1878 evidently were mostly right panes from Plate 3, and almost all had the gum removed because they were stuck together. This block is exceptional because it comes from the left pane and also because it has original gum. The double frameline and extra ruled line varieties are found only on the left pane. The ruled line between columns 7 and 8 is often confused with an interpane centerline.

FINE APPEARANCE. AN OUTSTANDING 12-CENT 1857 BLOCK FROM PLATE 3 AND VERY RARE ON THREE COUNTS -- ONE OF THE FEW KEY POSITION MULTIPLES KNOWN FROM THE LEFT PANE, AN UNUSUAL PLATE VARIETY AND STILL RETAINING ORIGINAL GUM (AS OPPOSED TO THE MULTIPLES SOAKED APART).
The 12c was printed from the new Plate 3 in 1860. In the fall of 1861, the federal government demonetized all previous issues of postage stamps and replaced them with new stamps that would be distributed only to post offices in loyal states. The purpose of demonetization was to prevent the South from using stamps as a medium of exchange. The demand for the high-denomination stamps in 1860 was limited, and the Civil War demonetization policy cut their lives short. Unused examples would be great rarities today if not for a cache of sheets discovered in Washington, D.C., which had been found in Southern post offices after the war and returned to the Post Office. These sheets were sold to dealer Ferdinand Trifet in 1878, and many of the unused stamps from late pre-war printings come from this source. Despite the survival of unused 1857-61 Issue remainders, key position multiples of Scott 36B from the left pane of Plate 3 are much rarer than those from the right pane.

VERY FINE. A SCARCE AND DESIRABLE 12-CENT 1857 BLOCK FROM PLATE 3 WITH ORIGINAL GUM AND INTERPANE CENTERLINE MARGIN.

Positions 9-10L3, horizontal pair with prominent plate scratches at top of righthand stamp and straddle-pane margin and centerline at right, bold blue grid cancel and part of Louisville Ky. double-circle datestamp, corner crease at top right and a few scissors-blunted perfs at left, otherwise Fine, the plate scratches are a consistent variety on Plate 3, ex Allen
12c Black, Plate 3 (36B). Position 51R3 with straddle-pane margin and centerline at left, handsome charcoal shade, Boston large "Paid" grid cancel, Very Fine and choice, ex Allen, with 1987 P.F. certificate incorrectly identifying this as a double frameline at left variety

Positions 9-10/19-20R3 with top right corner sheet selvage showing engraved remnants of phantom entry above top row, unused (no gum), crisp shade, some perf separations reinforced with hinges, a few tiny scuffed spots which is not unusual for unused multiples of Scott 36B since most of the stamps come from panes that were found stuck together in remainders sold after the Civil War, otherwise Fine, interesting plate variety caused by over-rocking the transfer roll into the blank space above the top-row entries, ex Allen, Scott value $5,000.00 as original-gum block and $1,500.00 as four singles without gum

Positions 85-86/95-96L3, block of four with sheet selvage at bottom, original gum, hinge remnant in selvage, attractive shade, vertical crease affects right stamps, light diagonal crease top left, Fine appearance, a scarce original-gum block from the left pane of Plate 3, Allen notes guide dots present on all four positions, we note large portions of the framelines along the vertical inner column are missing, ex Allen, with 2010 P.F. certificate
12c Black, Plate 3 (36B). Positions 91-92L3, horizontal pair with full corner sheet selvage, original gum, lightly hinged, deep shade, very fresh, bottom row of perfs mostly unpunched leaving frameline intact, light vertical wrinkle in selvage not noted on certificate
VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND VERY RARE LEFT PANE POSITION MULTIPLE FROM THE 1857 12-CENT PLATE 3.
Allen records only five left-margin examples from the left pane of Plate 3. This corner-margin pair with original gum is certainly the finest of that small group.
