$1.00 Candle Holder, Brown (Engraved) Color Inverted (1610c). Mint N.H., deep rich colors
VERY FINE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THIS POPULAR MODERN ERROR--THE Candleholder INVERT.
This error has been popularly called the "C.I.A. Invert" since a pane of 100 stamps was purchased at the McLean Va. Post Office by employees of the C.I.A., for use on mail from the agency. They noticed the error, pooled together funds to buy a replacement sheet and kept the stamps that remained for themselves. When it was discovered who had purchased the stamps, a scandal ensued over who actually owned the stamps. Of that pane of 100, only 93 reached collectors and did not include a plate block. Recently, a block of 20 from a second pane has emerged, which yielded the unique plate block we offered in 2023 (Sale 1305, lot 2526).

Modern Errors, Substantial Balance of a Collection. More than 115 items on stock pages and lot cards, this is the balance of a major modern errors collection offered individually in this sale and in two previous sales in 2024, these are mostly the items that catalogue in Scott for $500 or less, though some catalogue much more, almost all catalogue for at least $200, very wide range of issues from the 1950s up to recent, the condition is fresh nearly throughout, though a few higher cataloguing items may have a fault, our website PDF illustrates all the stamps and also has checklists for most, Scott value for the counted items is substantial and exceeds $40,000, a fabulous collection worth careful review, more than 15 certificates accompany
Tagging Varieties Collection, 1963-2007. Substantial collection filling seven albums, covers the full range of tagging beginning in 1963, including tagged and untagged as issued, varieties of tagging and of course the focus and value is the tagging omitted errors, which are voluminous, includes sheet stamps, coils and booklets, these pages were culled from a much larger collection that included a major modern error collection and other varieties, so many pages with tagging varieties here will also capture other varieties and even a few regular errors, many items were purchased from specialty dealers for hundreds of dollars and the total cost is multiples of our estimate, overall a fascinating and comprehensive showing of this area of philately, worth careful review, numerous certificates accompany, not easy to estimate as the vast majority of the tagging omitted varieties are unpriced in Scott, we set our estimate here at a fraction of retail cost
