Sale 1326, Lot 4315, Worldwide: British Guiana thru Finland

British Guiana, 1856, 4c Black on Magenta (14; SG 24). Large balanced margins, rich color with a sharp impression, signed "EDW(ight)", light Demerara cancel, faint corner creases at bottom left

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1856 4-CENT BLACK ON MAGENTA. A CLASSIC BRITISH COMMONWEALTH RARITY AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH FULL SQUARE MARGINS.

This Provisional issue was printed in Georgetown by Baum and Dallas, who published the Official Gazette. It has been hypothesized that the issue was printed due to a delay in the arrival of stamps from England. Many examples are either cut to shape or have heavy creases which discolor the paper. The example offered here, despite having very light corner creases, is a most desirable example of this world rarity.

From the same issue as the famous 1c Magenta. Ex "South Beach". With 1986 E. Diena and 2016 P.F. certificates. Scott $25,000. SG £25,000.

Colombia, Curtiss Aeroplane Co., Promotional Labels. Set of 19 labels, each with selvage at left showing various air post slogans and italic blue "Curtiss" at bottom, these include the nine designs selected for overprinting by SCADTA to produce Colombia Nos. C2-C10, bright and fresh colors throughout, missing the design for No. C3 as usual since only one or two examples are believed to exist, a few values have faint bends that appear to be from a paperclip (mostly in the margin)

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE SET OF THE CURTISS AEROPLANE CO. PROMOTIONAL LABELS WITHOUT OVERPRINT—NINE WERE OVERPRINTED TO CREATE NOS. C2-C10.

The labels were produced as advertisements in cigarette packs for the Curtiss Aeroplane Co. and feature the iconic Curtiss JN ("Jenny") in various scenes. The artist is unknown. Nine of the labels, without selvage, were overprinted by the Compania Colombiana de Navegacion Aerea (SCADTA) under contract with the Colombian Government, for use as Air Post stamps. The others were deemed inconvenient to arrange for the overprint or not appropriate for use. It is believed that 100 sets were purchased, though not proven, and only one or two of the Jenny in clouds design used for C3 were not overprinted.
