FRESH AND FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 4-CENT PAN-AMERICAN INVERT WITH SPECIMEN OVERPRINT. VERY SCARCE WITH UNDISTURBED ORIGINAL GUM.
A total of 173 4c Pan-American Invert stamps were distributed by the Third Assistant Postmaster General's office, and an additional 97 were traded by the National Museum. The majority of stamps distributed by the Post Office Department had the "Specimen" overprint, but some did not. Many have thin spots and/or disturbed gum. This sound lightly hinged example is better than the vast majority we have encountered.

VERY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM PAIR OF THE RARE 5-CENT VERTICAL COIL, SCOTT 317.
According to Johl, these first government coils were an experiment, and collectors and dealers were generally unaware of their existence. Regular sheets of 400 were printed and then perforated in only one direction. They were then cut into strips of 20. The strips were then pasted together to form rolls. As such, they are almost always strongly centered to one side.
Backstamped "CHM" (Charles H. Mekeel), "SS & Co" (Scott Stamp & Coin) and initialed "EK" (Eugene Klein). With 2023 P.F. certificate.

A strip of four is the largest recorded multiple and there are probably fewer than six in existence. This strip of three is also very rare.

We have offered numerous examples of this coil since keeping computerized records -- yet this is the first strip offered in our sales in the past 30 years. Our 1966 Rarities sale also had a strip of three.
