FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM PLATE BLOCK OF THE ONE-CENT 1861 ISSUE WITH SPECIMEN TYPE B OVERPRINT.
This is the first plate block we have offered since keeping computerized records. Only eight plate blocks are recorded for the underlying Scott 63, and this is considerably rarer.
90c Blue, Specimen Overprint Ty. B (72S-B). Three items, including block of four, top selvage strip of three and single, first two centered strongly to the right so much so that we would almost call them freaks, first unused (no gum), others original gum, Fine group, scarce as multiples, Scott value as singles
90c Blue, Imperforate, Manuscript "Specimen" Overprint (72cS). Overprint in hurried script, three huge margins, in at left, large part original gum, h.r., Very Good, very rare, ex Finkelburg and Dupuy, unlisted in Scott
1c-90c 1861 Issue, Red Control Number Ovpts. Ty. J (63S-J to 78S-J). Complete set of ten values, original gum, h.r., bright colors, generally centered to one side with several showing perfs touching or in, few small flaws
FINE AND SCARCE COMPLETE SET OF 1861 ISSUE STAMPS WITH BOND-NUMBERING MACHINE RED CONTROL NUMBER OVERPRINTS.
As demonstrated by this set, each of the denominations of the 1861 Issue are known with sequential control number overprints, from the highest denomination to the lowest starting with the 90c "1234", 30c "2345", 24c "3456" and so on except for the 15c, which has only three numbers — "235". Research by Michael Plett and Ken Gilbart (Chronicle Aug. 2012, pp. 214-226) solved the long-standing mystery of these specimens and determined that the overprints were applied by a bond-numbering mechanical device.

Unused (no gum) as they would have been pasted into a reference book, 10c straight edge at bottom, Fine, the Portuguese Ministry for the Colonies applied the "Ultramar" overprint ("overseas") upon receipt of the stamps from U.P.U. headquarters in Berne, between 1900 and 1910 the stamps were distributed to the various colonies, with a few exceptions this was replaced with "Colonias" in 1911, with 1981 P.F. certificates
