6c Proprietary, Orange, Perforated (R31c). Faint cancel, almost Fine, scarce, with 1985 P.F. certificate, Scott Catalogue notes "Nearly all examples of No. R31 are faulty and poorly centered. The catalogue value is for a fine centered stamp with minor faults which do not detract from its appearance."

VERY FINE. A RARE SOUND AND WELL-CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE CELEBRATED $500.00 LARGE PERSIAN RUG, WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL AND ELABORATELY ENGRAVED STAMPS IN ALL OF PHILATELY.
Only 210 were issued, and it is safe to say that most examples are faulty to some degree. A document exists from July 24, 1874, detailing the purchaser of each. Our census at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/R133 contains 87.
Census no. 5-1. Another is known used on the same day (possibly even from the same document) and was offered in our 2011 Rarities sale. Ex "Scarsdale", "Dragonfly" and from our 1985 Rarities sale. With 1995, 2002 and 2021 P.F. certificates. Scott value is for an example with a cut cancel or with minor faults.

J. M. Huntington & Co. was founded in 1858 and imported molasses, sugar, salt and other commodities from the West Indies. With 2024 P.F. certificate.
