2c Deep Rose, Ty. Ia (500). Mint N.H., characteristic Ty. Ia vivid color, near perfect centering with wide margins
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN OUTSTANDING MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT DEEP ROSE TYPE Ia, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E.
The Type Ia Scott 500 was created during an experiment of the Bureau in creating a new type of transfer roll. A die was made from the old Type I transfer roll, having ten impressions on it. A new transfer roll was then made, using the new ten-impression master die. This new transfer roll was then used to create two new plates. There are noticeable differences between the plates created using this method and the old method of using one die impression to create the transfer roll.
Ex "Sacramento". With 2014 P.S.E. and 2021 P.F. certificates (both Superb 98). Only one example grades higher (at Gem 100, most recently offered in our 2021 sale of the Myerson collection, realized $11,500 hammer) and four others share this desirable grade.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 1917 ISSUE IN THE DEEP BROWN COLOR.
According to Johl, a small number of stamps were printed in this distinctive shade early in the issue of the 1917 $1.00 stamp. During the course of the six years that the stamp was issued, all other printings were made in the normal shade. Centered examples such as the stamp offered here are true condition rarities.

This stamp was created in 1917 when a small excess supply of the imperforate Scott 344 was returned by the New York City post office to the Bureau for credit. Rather than issue the credit, the Bureau perforated the sheets and returned them to the New York City post office for public sale.

VERY FINE. A HIGHLY DESIRABLE AND RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1919 2-CENT TYPE II ROTARY PRESS WASTE ISSUE, SCOTT 539.
At the beginning or end of a coil-stamp print run from the 170-subject rotary plates, some leading or trailing paper was left over that was too short for rolling into 500-stamp rolls. In 1919, the Bureau devised a plan to salvage this waste by converting the stamps from coil stamps into sheet stamps. This was accomplished by cutting the sheets into panes and putting the panes through the flat-plate perforator in use at the time, giving the stamps perforations on all sides.
Since Scott 539 was put through two different perforating machines of differing gauges at different times, most of the stamps are off-center. Evidence of the rarity of Mint N.H. centered examples can be seen in the tiny graded populations -- the P.F. has graded one example at 85 and P.S.E. has graded one at 80, with none higher.
With 1962 (for block), 2008 and 2021 P.F. certificates (last VF 80). By way of comparison, the highest grade awarded by P.S.E. is one at 80.
2c Carmine Rose, Ty. III, Rotary Perf 11 x 10 (540). Mint N.H., essentially perfectly centered, Extremely Fine Gem, with 2016 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98), this is the highest grade awarded and only five others share it, the last 98 we offered realized $1,700 so SMQ may be out of date

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT TYPE III ROTARY WASTE ISSUE, SCOTT 546, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED AND ONLY TWO OTHERS SHARE IT.
According to Johl (p. 228), Scott 546 was printed on a rotary press and was perforated 11 on all sides, unlike waste issues such as Scott 539, which was perforated 11 on one side and 10 on the other. Collectors and dealers at the time were generally unaware that rotary press stamps had been issued in sheet form with the same perforations as flat plate stamps, so this issue was overlooked and most were either used or destroyed.
With 1999 P.F. and 2021 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98). This is the highest grade awarded and only two others share it (one is ex "Hanover" and Myerson, Sale 1231, lot 490).
