Sale 1315, Lot 5841, Revenues-Second Issue

$200.00 Red, Blue & Black, Second Issue, "Small Persian Rug" (R132). Almost perfectly centered, rich colors, detailed impressions, neat purple manuscript cancel, accompanying certificate mentions a "tiny natural translucent spot" to the right of Washington's head (open to interpretation)

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE $200.00 "SMALL PERSIAN RUG".

Both the Small and Large "Persian Rug" stamps were printed in sheets of one. Because of their size, the large number of perforations on each stamp, and the fact that they were used on documents which were frequently folded across the stamps, most examples are faulty to some degree.

Ex "Eastern" collection and Kingsley. With 2011 P.F. certificate.

Sale 1315, Lot 5842, Revenues-Second Issue

$500.00 Red Orange, Green & Black, Second Issue, "Large Persian Rug" (R133). Outstanding bright colors and detailed impressions, choice margins and centering, violet "J Wingate 17 July of 1872" manuscript cancel, certificate mentions a small surface scruff at the left edge of the vignette, which is utterly minute

VERY FINE appearance. A BEAUTIFUL, WELL-CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE CELEBRATED $500.00 "LARGE PERSIAN RUG," WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL AND ELABORATELY ENGRAVED STAMPS IN ALL OF PHILATELY.

Only 210 were issued, and it is safe to say that most examples are faulty to some degree. A document exists from July 24, 1874, detailing the purchaser of each. Our census at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/R133 contains 87 examples. The example offered here originated in an old estate and was unknown to the market for nearly 70 years before re-emerging in 2013 (it is not listed in the Kingsley census). At least one other is known cancelled by the same user (Siegel Sale 978, lot 1177).

Census no. 26-7. With 2014 P.F. certificate. Scott value is for an example with small faults.
