EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE 1920 $5.00 WAR SAVINGS ISSUE IS EXTREMELY RARE WITH SUCH CHOICE CENTERING AND WIDE MARGINS -- NEVER MIND IN MINT NEVER-HINGED CONDITION. THIS PLATE NUMBER EXAMPLE WITH MINT NEVER-HINGED STAMP IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST WE HAVE OFFERED.
War Savings stamps were issued annually from 1917-1921 and again from 1942 to 1945, to help fund participation in World Wars I and II. The stamp offered here was the final series of World War I, and matured on January 1, 1926. The online records of The Philatelic Foundation contains three others in Mint N.H. condition, including one with a straight edge and natural crease and another with a crease. Only one other is sound, offered in our 2017 sale of the Grant Inman collection, which was Extremely Fine and realized $11,000 hammer (it does not have plate no. selvage). This example has much wider margins than the Inman copy and is the finest we have offered.
$1.00 Treasury Savings (TS1). Original gum, lightly hinged, intense shade and impression, wide margins
VERY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 TREASURY SAVINGS ISSUE. An extremely DIFFICULT ISSUE TO OBTAIN WITH SUCH CHOICE CENTERING.
A Power Search review shows that most examples of this issue have poor centering. Of the 21 unduplicated examples we have offered, perhaps one or two compare favorably to the example offered here.
