25c and 50c First Issue Perforated on Document. 22 stamps, several different, on both sides of a Sun Mutual Insurance Co. Transit Insurance Policy made out to Steinway & Sons, the famous Piano Manufacturers, the revenues were added each time additional premiums were paid, the policy lists a record of ship names and destinations for piano shipments, some splitting along folds and stamp faults, very unusual and desirable historical record of this well-known New York City firm, ex Tolman
$5.00 Probate of Will, Red, Imperforate (R92a). Full margins to huge at top, Apr. 2, 1864 manuscript cancel on Pennsylvania mortgage document, Very Fine, Scott value for the used stamp
25c Blue & Black, Second Issue, Privately Perforated 8 (R112d). Affixed to "The Philadelphia Trust Safe Deposit & Insurance Company" stock certificate dated June 1, 1872, cancelled by manuscript, full perforations on all sides with a single pulled perf at lower right, Very Fine and rare use of this perforation variety on original document, accompanied by Philip Ward article noting that the Perf 8's were used early and quickly discontinued as there was apparently difficulty in separating them, many are scissors-separated on at least one side, only two are believed to exist on their original documents, ex Tolman, Scott value as off-document stamp $850
$25.00 Blue & Black, Second Issue (R130). Used with $1.00 Green & Black, Third Issue (R144), both with neat May 15, 1872 manuscript cancels on New York City indenture, some minor splits along a fold but overall the document and stamps are fresh, Very Fine and rare use of this issue on a full document, paying $26.00 tax for a $26,000 mortgage, likely fewer than five are known, Scott value as used stamp does not convey the rarity of this use on a document
$50.00 Blue & Black, Second Issue (R131). Used with $2.00, $3.00 and $5.00 Second Issue (R123, R125, R127), Oct. 13, 1871 manuscript cancels on New York City indenture, the three lower value stamps with a file fold or small fault but the $50.00 is sound and Fine, a very rare use of this issue on a full document, paying $60.00 tax for a $60,000 mortgage, likely fewer than five are known, Scott value as used stamps does not convey the rarity of the use of a $50.00 on a document
$20.00 Orange & Black, Third Issue (R150). Canceled by blue July 13, 1872 double-circle datestamp on New York City indenture, a small bit of color oxidation in the lettering at top, but overall the document and stamp are fresh, Very Fine and rare use of this issue on a full document, paying $20.00 tax for a $20,000 mortgage, likely fewer than five are known, Scott value as used stamp does not convey the rarity of this use on a document
