1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Position 100R4, part original gum called "small part" on most recent certificate but which covers about half of the back, fine impression and rich color, well-centered, the bottom perfs in but intact due to scissors separation, which nicely shows the nearly complete Type Ia characteristics at bottom
FINE AND RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE Ia.
Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Although Plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in the perforations often cutting into the design at either top or bottom. For this reason, stamps from the bottom row of Plate 4 with perforations into the design are still desirable — especially with intact perfs which show the nearly full plumes.
From our 1995 and 2019 Rarities sales. With 1984 and 2008 P.F. certificates. Scott value without gum.

AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1858 5-CENT BRICK RED.
After surveying dozens of classic United States sale catalogues, we found approximately 25 examples of Scott 27 with original gum, allowing for duplicate offerings and excluding the one known original-gum block. Of the stamps we counted, about half had perfs touching on two sides or were deeply cut into on one side. Almost two-thirds had stains or faults. This is a presentable example of this rare stamp.
Scott value $80,000.

5c Red Brown (28). Disturbed original gum described on accompanying certificate as "unused o.g.", lovely color, detailed impression, tiny corner margin crease at bottom right, small stained spot on Jefferson's chin
FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT RED BROWN.
The perforated 5c “1856” Red Brown (Scott 28) stamps were made from the stock of imperforate stamps on hand in 1857 when perforations were introduced. Since these were the first 5c stamps to be put through the perforating machine, they were the first to be used, and very few unused examples survive, especially with original gum.

5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). Vertical pair, original gum, small areas of what may be hinging along vertical crease at left, perfs scissors-separated at right and with part of captured imprint, lovely color
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM PAIR OF THE 1860 5-CENT BROWN TYPE II, WITH CAPTURED IMPRINT AT RIGHT.
Unlike its Orange Brown counterpart, the 5c Type II in Brown was not on hand in post offices when the 1861 demonetization order took effect. Therefore, original-gum examples of Scott 30A (the Brown shade) are far rarer than Scott 30. Few unused multiples are known, and it is especially rare with the captured imprint. Scott value with no premium for the imprint.
5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). Block of four, original gum, rich color, each with small thin spot
FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF THE 1860 5-CENT TYPE II BROWN.
The 5c Brown Type II is far rarer in unused multiples than the Orange Brown. Unlike the 1861 Orange Brown, the earlier printing in Brown was not left in Southern post offices when the issue was demonetized in August 1861. Prior to the discovery of the block of 20 in the Frelinghuysen collection (also ex Gross, Sale 1200, lot 44), the largest recorded multiple was a block of nine. Approximately a half-dozen blocks of four are known.
5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). Block of four, unused (no gum), rich color, very extensive perf separations reinforced with hinges, overall Fine-Very Fine, Scott value for an original-gum block is $25,000, Scott value $3,400 as four no-gum singles

10c Green, Ty. III (33). Deep rich color, neat strike of grid cancel, unusually choice centering
EXTREMELY FINE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT TYPE III 1857 ISSUE.
With 2019 P.S.A.G. certificate (XF-Superb 95).
10c Green, Ty. IV (34). Position 64L1, recut at top and bottom, the scarcest and most desirable of the recut types, disturbed original gum, perfs trimmed at left, slight diagonal crease at bottom right, light corner crease
FINE APPEARANCE. THE 1857 10-CENT TYPE IV IS ONE OF THE RAREST CLASSIC UNITED STATES ISSUES IN UNUSED CONDITION. the position 64l1 double recut adds to its rarity.
The 1857 10c Type IV stamps come from only eight positions scattered throughout Plate 1, that have the top, bottom, or in the case of Position 64L (the stamp offered here), both lines recut. 64L1 is the only position to show both lines recut and as such it is the best example of the type. Only 4% of all 10c Plate 1 stamps produced were Type IV's, and an even smaller percentage were issued with perforations. We have only offered five others with any gum whatsoever since 1997, and only one of these was Position 64L1. It has similar centering to the example offered here and the gum was variously described on different certificates as "small part disturbed", "traces" and "of unknown origin"
Scott value $75,000.
12c Black, Plate 1 (36). Mint N.H. block of four, intense shade and impression, top left stamp diagonal crease, Very Good, Mint N.H. examples of the 12c from Plate 1 are extremely rare, with 2010 P.F. certificate, Scott value as hinged block is $10,000
12c Black, Plate 1 (36). Block of six, tied by "Lansing Mich. Dec. 28" circular datestamp on buff piece, varying degrees of faults nearly throughout including top left and bottom right stamps defective, otherwise Fine and scarce used block of six, Scott value as block and pair is $4,250
30c Orange (38). Bright color, neat strike of San Francisco circular datestamp, well-proportioned margins, Extremely Fine, with 2013 P.S.E. and 2023 P.F. certificates (both XF 90)
90c Blue (39). Unused, either regummed or disturbed and redistributed original gum, small faults including short perfs and small thin, otherwise Fine, Scott value as no-gum
90c Blue (39). Dark shade, well-centered, small thin spots
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1860 ISSUE.
The highest value of the 1851-60 series—the 90c stamp with a portrait of the youthful George Washington in military uniform—was issued in 1860 (earliest recorded use is September 11). Its use was limited by the high denomination and the stamp's relatively short life, due to the demonetization of all United States stamps in August 1861, a measure designed to preclude the sale of stamps originating in rebel states' post offices.
With 1976 P.F. certificate.
90c Blue (39). Deep rich color, neat strike of large Boston "Paid" grid cancel, reperfed at right
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE USED EXAMPLE OF THE SHORT-LIVED 90-CENT 1860 ISSUE.
The 90c stamp was issued in 1860, along with the 24c and 30c values, all of which were needed to prepay high international letter rates established by various postal treaties. The basic 24c and 30c rates to England, France and Germany created a volume of mail franked with those values. However, the 90c saw much more limited use, partly due to the rates in effect, but more because of the American Civil War. When supplies of current postage stamps were declared invalid in the South and ultimately demonetized by the Federal government, the 90c had been in use for only one year. For this reason, genuinely cancelled copies are scarce, and covers bearing the 90c are extremely rare.
With 2016 P.S.E. certificate.
90c Blue (39). Grid cancel, faults including creases, tears and reperfed, otherwise Fine and reasonably presentable example of this scarce used stamp, Scott value $10,000

5c Orange Brown, Reprint (42). Without gum as issued, better margins and centering than normally encountered, wide at left showing trace of imprint, Very Fine, 2007 P.F. certificate no longer accompanies, with 2024 P.S.E. certificate
5c Orange Brown, Reprint (42). Without gum as issued, small faults, otherwise Fine
