FINE and extremely rare mint never-hinged plate block of eight of the 3-cent 1857 issue from plate 20.
We have offered numerous plate blocks of Scott 26 in varying sizes since keeping computerized records 30 years ago, including two in full-panes of 100. However, Power Search reveals a startling fact — none of these multiples had all eight stamps in the plate block in Mint N.H. condition. This is the only fully Mint N.H. plate block we have offered since 1993.
Scott value $4,250 as hinged plate block.

extremely fine used example of the 1857 10-cent type i, WHICH CLEARLY SHOW THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TYPE.
10c Type I stamps come only from the 20 positions that comprise the bottom row of the plate. Due to narrow spacing on the plate and difficulties in aligning the perforating machine, stamps at the bottom of the plate often have perforations cutting into the bottom portion of the design. This is a serious drawback, because Type I is defined as having the design complete at bottom. The stamp offered here, which is very well-centered and clearly shows the type characteristics, is a condition rarity.
With 2016 P.F. certificate (XF 90).
10c Green, Ty. I (31). Wide margins and well-centered, extra wide bottom margin nicely shows the full shells that define the type, rich color, circular datestamp cancel, Very Fine and choice, ex Roush, with 1999 P.F. certificate
10c Green, Ty. IV (34). Position 64L1, recut at top and bottom, the scarcest and most desirable of the recut types, disturbed original gum, perfs trimmed at left, slight diagonal crease at bottom right, light corner crease
FINE APPEARANCE. THE 1857 10-CENT TYPE IV IS ONE OF THE RAREST CLASSIC UNITED STATES ISSUES IN UNUSED CONDITION. the position 64l1 double recut adds to its rarity.
The 1857 10c Type IV stamps come from only eight positions scattered throughout Plate 1, that have the top, bottom, or in the case of Position 64L (the stamp offered here), both lines recut. 64L1 is the only position to show both lines recut and as such it is the best example of the type. Only 4% of all 10c Plate 1 stamps produced were Type IV's, and an even smaller percentage were issued with perforations. We have only offered three others with any gum whatsoever in the past 20 years, and only one of these was Position 64L1. It had similar centering to the example offered here and was described as "traces of gum".
Scott value $55,000.

24c Gray Lilac (37). Choice centering and margins, well-struck blue "Paid" in oval cancel, single slightly short perf at left, still Extremely Fine with an attractive cancel, with 2013 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85), this would likely be XF 90 if not for the single short perf
24c Gray Lilac (37). Detailed impression, well-balanced margins, grid cancel, Extremely Fine
24c Gray Lilac (37). Detailed impression, well-balanced margins, open grid cancel, Very Fine and choice, with 1994 P.F. certificate

30c Orange (38). Nicely centered, double-struck "10" in circle cancel, hint of color oxidation, Very Fine, with clear 2011 P.F. certificate
90c Blue (39). Appears unused but accompanying certificate states "cleaned cancel", small thin spot and corner crease, appears Very Fine, it is curious why anyone would clean off the cancel on this issue since it is so much more rare in genuinely used condition, with 2021 P.S.A.G. certificate, SCV $10,000 as genuinely used, $1,400 as unused without gum
90c Blue (39). Rich color nicely complemented by red cancel, ink on back from owner's markings shows thru slightly at bottom
