Sale Date — Tuesday, 21 April, 2026
Category — Colored Cancellations-Green
1c Buff (112). Beautifully centered and cancelled by a rare green town datestamp, choice fresh color
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS PROBABLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE WITH A GREEN CANCEL.
This stamp is remarkable for its outstanding color, centering, impression and the cancel.
Ex Lehman and Drs. Dauer. With 2004 P.F. certificate.
1c Buff (112). Choice centering with well-proportioned margins, radiant color beautifully complemented by green 6-bar open grid cancel, trace of additional blue cancel at upper right
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL USED EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE WITH A GREEN GRID CANCEL.
The 1c 1869 Pictorial comes with green cancels (it is rare), but the underlying stamp is almost always off-center. The number of sound and centered examples with the cancel struck clearly is extremely small.
Ex Barwis. With 1993 and 2008 P.F. certificates
2c Brown (113). Choice centering and margins, beautiful strike of bright green circular cork cancel
EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE CANCELLED IN GREEN. THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.
A review using Power Search and checking the records of The Philatelic Foundation found very few sound and centered examples of this issue with a green cancel.
Ex Morton. With 2014 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85; unpriced in SMQ with green cancel).
3c Ultramarine (114). Wide margins and choice centering, bold strike of green circular cork cancel fills up nearly the entire design — which remains fully visible beneath the cancel
EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE, WITH CHOICE CENTERING AND A GREEN CANCEL.
This is one of the finest we have ever encountered. Ex Morton. With 2003 P.F. certificate.
3c Ultramarine (114). Well-balanced margins, rich color, green circle of wedges cancel, Extremely Fine, a stamp with great eye appeal, the cancel looks similar to the examples on cover used from Owego N.Y. (see lot 146 in this sale), ex Cole and Renne, with 1988 and 1999 P.F. certificates
3c Ultramarine (114). Crisp impression nicely complemented by bright green quartered cork cancel, wide margins, tiny corner perf crease at top right not mentioned on accompanying certificate, Extremely Fine strike, a beautiful cancel, ex Eubanks, with 1985 P.F. certificate
3c Ultramarine (114). Vertical pair, rich color on bright paper, tied by well-struck green circle of wedges cancels, matching "Owego N.Y. Oct. 12" circular datestamp on cover to Martin Mich., barely reduced at right, Very Fine-Extremely Fine, the top stamp is especially well-centered, ex Weill Brothers and Hill, with 1999 P.F. certificate
12c Green (117). Rich color and detailed impression, clear strike of green circular cork cancel, small tear at top left and internal diagonal crease are barely noticeable
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE 12-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT DENOMINATIONS TO OBTAIN WITH A GREEN CANCEL. BETWEEN THE RECORDS OF THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION AND OUR POWER SEARCH, WE WERE ABLE TO LOCATE ONLY SEVEN EXAMPLES WITH GREEN CANCELS, AND THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST.
The Philatelic Foundation has certified only seven examples with a green cancel, including one with double horizontal perforations where the bottom perfs were deemed counterfeit. None are sound and most are off-center. We have offered five since keeping computerized records, all of which have certificates.
Ex Sale 362 (1969 auction, lot 565), Haas and Saadi. With 1991 P.F. certificate. Scott assigns a $3,500 premium for the green cancel.
30c Blue & Carmine (121). Rich colors, bold strike of green Star fancy cancel, lightened manuscript cancel noted on certificate but it has no effect on the green cancel
VERY FINE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE CANCELLED IN GREEN. ONLY TWO HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION.
The other example cancelled in green has a black cork cancel struck at top and a green "Bremen/Franco" transit marking struck at bottom (Sale 1133, lot 253, realized $9,500 hammer). Other denominations are known cancelled by a green Star: Sobethy's Juhring sale contained a 1c, Siegel's Haas sale (Sale 417) contained a 3c, and Newbury Part 2 contained a 10c.
Illustrated in Nov. 2011 Chronicle on the cover and p. 351. Illustrated in Oct. 20, 1997 Linn's Stamp News. Ex Jon Rose. With 1997 P.F. certificate. Scott assigns a $7,500 premium for a green cancel.
