5c Orange Brown, Reprint (42). Without gum as issued, lovely warm color on bright paper, unusually wide and balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1857 REPRINT. SCARCE IN SUCH CHOICE CONDITION.

The Continental Bank Note Company reprinted the 5c stamp from the original plate of 200 subjects. 10,000 were printed (50 impressions). Only 878 were sold; the remaining 9,122 were destroyed on July 23, 1884, by order of the Postmaster General. Due to the narrow spacing between subjects, many have perforations touching the design at either top or bottom. The example offered here, with perfectly balanced margins, is a remarkable stamp.

With 1986 and 2015 P.F. certificates (XF 90). By way of comparison P.S.E. has graded only two higher (at 95) and three equal.

10c Blue Green, Reprint (43). Without gum as issued, deep rich color on bright paper, better centering than normally seen

EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1857 REPRINT, GRADED XF 90 BY P.S.E. — RARE IN SUCH CHOICE CONDITION.

The Continental Bank Note Company made a new plate for the 10c 1857 Reprint, consisting of 100 subjects, using an original transfer roll. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). All are Type I stamps. 516 of the 10c were sold, and the remaining 9,484 were destroyed on July 23, 1884, by order of the Postmaster General.

With 1975 P.F. and 2017 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90). Only one grades higher (at 95, last offered by us in 2009) and only one other shares this grade (also last offered by us in 2009).

12c Greenish Black, Reprint (44). Without gum as issued, intense shade and proof-like impression, unusually choice centering

VERY FINE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1857 REPRINT.

The Continental Bank Note Company made a new plate for the 12c 1857 Reprint, consisting of 100 subjects, using an original transfer roll. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). 489 of the 12c were sold, and the remaining 9,511 were destroyed on July 23, 1884, by order of the Postmaster General. The narrow spaces between stamps on the 12c 1857 Reprint plate allowed almost no room for large 12-gauge perforations, and the Reprints were generally perforated into parts of the design. Examples such as this, with the framelines complete on all four sides, are extremely rare.

With 2003 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85). Only six grade higher (five at 90, one at 90J).

24c Blackish Violet, Reprint (45). Without gum as issued, remarkable color on bright white paper, precise centering, scissors-separated at right

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN UNUSUALLY WELL-CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE 24-CENT 1857 REPRINT.

The Continental Bank Note Company reprinted the 24c stamp from the original plate of 200 subjects. 10,000 were printed (50 impressions). Only 479 were sold; the remaining 9,521 were destroyed on July 23, 1884. Due to the narrow spacing between subjects, most have perforations touching or into the design.

With 1996 P.F. and 2011 P.S.E. certificates (VF 80). Only eight grade higher (highest is one at 90J).
