EXTREMELY FINE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1861 BUFF with a WELL-STRUCK SAN FRANCISCO COGWHEEL CANCEL.
Due to narrow spacing on the 5c plate, it is very difficult to find centered copies with the perforations clear of the design on all sides.

The 24c 1861 exists in four basic shades of Violet: Dark Violet (August 1861 trial printing, formerly Scott 60); Violet on Thin Paper (August-September 1861 regular issue, Scott 70c — the shade offered here); Pale Gray Violet (1861 regular issue, Scott 70d) and Blackish Violet (ca. 1863 printing, Scott 78c).

EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 24-CENT IN THE PALE GRAY VIOLET COLOR.
The 24c Pale Gray Violet, Scott 70d, comes from an early 1861 printing on thin paper, a characteristic shared by the Violet and Steel Blue stamps. Scott 70d's rarity has been more widely recognized in recent years — we have only sold two with original gum since keeping computerized records, and we have sold very few sound used copies in Extremely Fine condition.

Deep rich color complemented by bold strike of red Heart fancy cancel (Skinner-Eno PF-H 25), tiny tear at bottom right, Very Fine strike, when we consulted Power Search to find how out many Scott 72s we have offered with a Heart fancy cancel, we assumed there would be very few and that the vast majority of such stamps would be 3c issues — incredibly, we came up with zero — with 1994 P.F. certificate
90c Pale Blue (72a). Distinctive shade, cancelled by deep blue Cincinnati O. circular datestamp, wide and nicely balanced margins, unusual plate impression, Extremely Fine, with 2004 P.F. certificate
90c Blue (72). Deep and rich color, proof-like impression, full strike of Boston "PAID" in oval cancel, Very Fine and choice, ex Saadi, 1994 P.F. certificate no longer accompanies, with 2014 P.F. certificate

Brilliant color and crisp impression, Jumbo margins, well-struck blue circle of wedges cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, a superb stamp in every respect, ex Dr. Morris, Collier and "Golden Oak,", with 1996 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90 Jumbo), only eleven grade higher and two share this grade, we have offered a number of the others and only one we have encountered that grades equal or higher has a blue cancel
