EXTREMELY FINE GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1867 12-CENT E GRILL, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.. ONLY TWO GRADE HIGHER.
Ex Morton. With 2003 P.F. and 2014 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95). Only two grade higher (at 95J and 98) and seven others share this desirable grade.
12c Black, E. Grill (90). Block of six, clear grills, crisp impression, neat strikes of "leaf" fancy cancel, slight wrinkling at top of top right and top center stamps
FINE-VERY FINE AND RARE. THIS IS ONE OF THREE RECORDED USED BLOCKS OF SIX, THE LARGEST RECORDED USED MULTIPLE OF THE 1868 12-CENT E GRILL.
Ex Herzog, Hanschen and Curtis. Scott value as block of four and pair.
1c Blue, F. Grill, Very Thin Paper (92). Excellent centering and margins, bold and perfect strike of target cancel which also misses Franklin's face, bright color
EXTREMELY FINE. A GORGEOUS EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT F GRILL ON VERY THIN PAPER WITH A VERY ATTRACTIVE CANCEL.
A review using Power Search reveals that this is the finest example of Scott No. 92 on thin paper we have offered since at least 1993. With 2026 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90). SMQ does not separately price this variety but values the normal No. 92 at $1,750 for a 90 grade — with only ten grading higher. Scott prices the thin paper variety 66% higher than the normal No. 92.

FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM STRIP OF SIX WITH PLATE NUMBER AND MOST OF THE IMPRINT OF THE 1868 3-CENT F GRILL. THIS PLATE NUMBER WAS PREVIOUSLY UNLISTED.

3c Red, F. Grill (94). Bottom selvage strip of three with plate no. 11 and part imprint, original gum, h.r., some perf separations at left reinforced, wrinkling in selvage at left extends just into left stamp, otherwise Fine, Scott value as pair and single without premium for the position
3c Red, F. Grill, Imperforate (94P5; formerly 94b). Horizontal pair with top imprint sheet margin, large margins other sides, rich color, original gum, lightly hinged, Very Fine and choice, this is the top pair in a block offered in our 1980 Rarities sale, plate numbers do not exist from the top position and we are not aware of any bottom sheet-margin examples with either imprint or plate number, Scott value without premium for the better position
10c Yellow Green, F. Grill (96). Large part original gum which covers the majority of the back, Fine, with 2026 P.S.E. certificate, SCV $2,750 for original gum
12c Black, F. Grill (97). Jumbo margins, crisp impression, bold cork cancel with trace of red transit at bottom left, Extremely Fine, with 1995 and 2018 P.F. certificates (latter XF 90)

FINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1868 12-CENT F GRILL, SCOTT 97.
Our records contain around a dozen original-gum blocks of the 12c F Grill. Some of these have may have been broken to feed collector demand for singles, and therefore the number of surviving multiples may be smaller. Blocks of four are the largest surviving multiples, since the Caspary block of eight has been broken.

Ex Bowman. With 1997, 2000 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95). Unpriced in SMQ as thin paper variety. SMQ as normal paper.
24c Gray Lilac, F. Grill (99). Block of four, original gum, small hinge remnants at left and right sensibly reinforcing perfs, straddle-pane margin at left with full vertical guideline, clear grills which are shifted towards bottom
FRESH AND FINE. A REMARKABLE ORIGINAL-GUM POSITION BLOCK OF THE 1868 24-CENT F GRILL.
Our records contain fewer than ten blocks of four, plus the iconic ex Gross pieces—a plate block of eight (Sale 1188, lot 85) and a block of 15 (Sale 1200, lot 92). These blocks come from the complete pane in the de Coppet collection sold in 1893. The block offered here is similar to the one offered in our Przybyl sale (Sale 1244 lot 166) which also shows the guideline at left and has bottom selvage.

EXTREMELY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE, SCOTT 104.
The 3c Re-Issue was printed from one of the original plates, which contained 200 subjects in two panes. 10,000 were printed (50 impressions). Only 465 of the 3c were sold; the remaining 9,535 were destroyed on July 16, 1884.
