(Liberia to Philadelphia, 1860) Remarkable Abolitionist Letter. Blue cover addressed to Benjamin Coates in Philadelphia, neat "Baltimore Md. Mar. 5" circular datestamp with matching "SHIP" and "5" handstamps, with original enclosure datelined "Government House, Monrovia, Jan. 23rd, 1860", letter written by Stephen A. Benson, the President of Liberia, to a prominent abolitionist, the letter refers to the raid at Harper's Ferry by John Brown and also expresses the wish that Frederick Douglas will come and settle in Liberia, the letter split along fold, still Very Fine and unusual, the sender was born in Maryland in 1816 and taken to Liberia with his parents in 1822
