Collect/Six Cents/for/Hale & Co. Red framed handstamp on folded letter from Macao to New York, datelined "Macao, Dec. 6, 1844" with sender's ship directive "per 'Haugua'", Very Fine, carried from Macao to New York outside the mails, a similar cover to this one but addressed to Salem Mass. (see lot 8051) was given to forwarder Wetmore & Cryder, who in turn gave it to Hale & Co. for its northbound mail, this is an extremely rare inbound cover from China carried by Hale & Co., Gutman records only two from Macau and two from Canton, ex Hahn
