15c Dark Blue (274). Intense shade and well-centered, tied by numeral "2" grid and "Mar 10-98 New York 630PM" oval emergency duplex datestamp device on cover to Germany, receiving backstamps, small piece of backflap removed, Extremely Fine -- this is an extremely rare example of the emergency hand-cancellers supplied by the Post Office Dept. and used briefly in early 1898, which were necessary due to overwhelming demand to replace worn-out devices and to supply new offices and military camps during the Spanish-American War -- an accompanying article by K. F. Olson identifies the oval as Type I
