American Express. Paid. Printed frank (Thomas AME-004, with periods after "Express" and "Paid") on 3c Red on White Nesbitt entire (U9) to San Francisco, no other express markings (none of the recorded covers have handstamps), couple inconsequential edge tears, Very Fine, a choice example of this scarce and appealing frank depicting a dog guarding a safe, sailing schooner, steam vessel and railroad train, American Express consolidated with Nichols Express in late 1858 or 1859, this distinctive frank was used by both companies, ex Dale-Lichtenstein and Lyons
