10c Yellow Green (68). Tied by large blue "Wells, Fargo & Cos. Express, SFrco. 11 Jan." double-circle datestamp on cover to New York, red Wells, Fargo & Co. printed frank, 1862 docketing on back, stamp with tear at top, minor wear, Very Fine and unusual, most printed franks were on entires, however the Star Dies had run out of stock on the West Coast and Wells Fargo needed additional red franked transcontinental envelopes, the postal convention stated that expresses had to print their franks on entires, this is a case where the rules were broken and they were printed on plain envelopes which then had 10c stamps affixed and were sold as if they were entires, making these "provisionals", only seven are recorded
