Elaborately framed frank with letter mailing instructions on 3c Pink entire, blue "Private Post Office No. 5 Kearny St. S.F. June 3" double-circle datestamp cancels embossed stamp, second strike on back, to local address, some staining on front, Very Fine appearance, this is the only recorded used example of the San Francisco Private Post Office local printed frank printed on white -- according to research by John Bowman and Gordon Stimmell (see Penny Post Oct. 2005, pp. 24-25 and Chronicle No. 208, p. 271), the Private Post Office changed its name to the Public Letter Office -- or the other way around depending on one's interpretation of the dates and the evidence connecting the two from the back of a corner cut for the Private Post Office in Stimmell's collection -- before it was believed that the two operations were separate and this is the reason for the separate Scott Catalogue listings (123LU and 125LU) -- ex Dale-Lichtenstein and Lyons, Scott value $4,750.00
