Sale 1362, Lot 1454, 1893 Columbian Issue (Scott 230-245)

$5.00 Black, Columbian (245). Original gum, single hinge mark, with left sheet selvage, intense shade and impression, gorgeous centering with wide and balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE $5.00 COLUMBIAN ISSUE, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (OGph, XF-Superb 95). The $5.00 Columbian is deceptively difficult to obtain in higher grades. For Mint N.H. the highest grade is a 95, and one of the two at that grade recently brought $80,000 hammer in our "Vaquero" sale. For hinged the highest grade is 98 but we have not offered one since our 2009 "Beverly Hills" sale. There are eight hinged graded 95J, and we have only sold two of them since 2014. There are 16 others graded 95, but they also do not come up very often — the last we offered was in our 2020 Morton auction.
